Organization Introduction

The World Health Organization (WHO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations dedicated to international public health. Established on April 7, 1948, its primary role is to direct and coordinate international health within the United Nations system. WHO's mission is to promote health, keep the world safe, and serve the vulnerable. It works globally to achieve universal health coverage, address health emergencies, and promote healthier populations. Its functions include providing leadership on health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries, and monitoring and assessing health trends.

Factory or Trader

The World Health Organization is neither a factory nor a trading company. It is an intergovernmental public health organization. It does not engage in the manufacturing of products or the commercial buying and selling of goods. Its activities are focused on public health policy, standards, guidance, technical assistance, and global health coordination.

Presence in Bangladesh

WHO maintains a Country Office in Bangladesh, which works in close collaboration with the Government of Bangladesh, particularly the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and other national and international partners. The WHO Country Office in Bangladesh provides technical support, strategic guidance, and coordination for various health programs and initiatives. These efforts are aimed at strengthening the national health system, preventing and controlling diseases (both communicable and non-communicable), improving maternal and child health, enhancing emergency preparedness and response, and promoting universal health coverage throughout the country.

The World Health Organization WHO is not a company that produces or sells products in the traditional commercial sense. It is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for international public health.

In Bangladesh, as in other countries, WHO's role involves:

Providing technical support and guidance to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on health policies and strategies.

Supporting the implementation of national health programs, such as immunization campaigns against preventable diseases like polio, measles, and tetanus.

Assisting with disease surveillance, early warning systems, and outbreak response for diseases like cholera, dengue, and COVID-19.

Strengthening health systems, including primary healthcare, human resources for health, and access to essential medicines.

Facilitating access to and distribution of essential health commodities, including vaccines and medical supplies, often procured through global mechanisms, rather than direct manufacturing or selling by WHO itself.

Promoting health education and awareness on various public health issues, including maternal and child health, nutrition, and non-communicable diseases.

Supporting emergency preparedness and response activities during natural disasters and health crises.

Therefore, WHO does not have a list of products it manufactures or sells. Its contributions are in the form of technical expertise, policy advice, capacity building, and coordination of health initiatives.
