The Auroville Foundation is a statutory body established by an Act of the Indian Parliament (Auroville Foundation Act, 1988). Its primary purpose is to hold, manage, and develop Auroville, an international township project located in Tamil Nadu, India. Auroville was envisioned as a universal town where men and women of all countries can live in peace and progressive harmony, above all creeds, all politics, and all nationalities. The Foundation ensures the preservation of Auroville's ideals and objectives as laid out by its founder, Mirra Alfassa (The Mother). It oversees the township's administration, land acquisition, and the various activities within Auroville, which encompass educational, cultural, research, spiritual, and economic units.

Is it a factory or a trader?

The Auroville Foundation is neither a factory nor a trader. It is a statutory foundation responsible for the governance, management, and development of the Auroville township. While Auroville itself hosts numerous diverse units, some of which are involved in manufacturing (e.g., handicrafts, food products, sustainable technologies) or trade, the Foundation itself does not operate as a commercial factory or a trading company. It serves as the overarching legal and administrative body for the entire Auroville project.

The Auroville Foundation, as the managing body for the Auroville township, facilitates various units and enterprises that produce and sell a diverse range of products. These typically include organic food products such as spices, honey, jams, and herbal teas. They also offer natural body care items including soaps, essential oils, and cosmetics. Handicrafts like pottery, handmade paper, candles, and incense are commonly available. Textiles and handloom apparel are produced, alongside furniture and home decor items. Additionally, books and publications related to Auroville, Sri Aurobindo, and The Mother are sold, and some units offer renewable energy solutions, particularly solar products.
