BASF is increasingly relying on renewable energies for the production of technical plastics. As part of so-called green energy manufacturing, electricity, steam and heat from renewable sources are used, among other things, to reduce the product carbon footprint (PCF) of the materials. The product properties and processing processes should remain unchanged.
The concept is part of BASF's “Engineering Plastics Sustainability Toolbox”. In addition to the consumption of renewable energies, this also includes mechanically recycled materials and mass-balanced solutions based on alternative raw materials.
In environmentally friendly energy manufacturing, fossil fuels are partially replaced by renewable substitutes. Renewable steam and process heat can be generated, to instance, with electric power, heat pumps, process discarded materials heat or biomethane. Since the material characteristics do not change due to the changed energy supply, the plastics can be applied as a drop-in solution in existing manufacturing processes.

BASF cites the collaboration with Eaton and Bosch as practical examples. Eaton is already using materials with a reduced product carbon footprint at the Schrems production site in Austria. According to the companies, this does not require any fundamental changes to existing manufacturing processes.
Bosch also uses thermoplastic plastics with reduced PCF. to a product purchased by BASF in 2026, a reduction in the CO₂ footprint by around 1,000 tons of CO₂ equivalents is expected to the corresponding annual amount.
According to BASF, customers in the engineering plastics sector were able to consumption corresponding solutions to decrease their CO₂ footprint by a total of around 2,000 tons of CO₂ equivalents per year in 2025.
According to BASF, the product carbon footprint is calculated according to ISO 14067:2018. The company describes items with reduced PCF as materials whose “cradle-to-gate” footprint is at least ten percent below that of a comparable conventional BASF product. Renewable electricity and steam as well as chain-of-custody models, some of which are mass-accounting, are applied to decrease releases.
