Isooctanol prices consolidated at high levels

According to the commodity market analysis system of SunSirs, the price of isooctanol was 8,066.67 RMB/ton on August 7. Compared to the price of 7,900 RMB/ton on August 1, the price initially fell however subsequently rose, marking a net increase of 2.11%; relative to the price on July 27, the price also saw an initial decline followed by a rise, ultimately stabilizing. At the end of July, as tensions in the Middle East eased, isooctanol prices retreated from their highs, and the downward direction continued into August with major manufacturers lowering ex-factory prices. However, due to the vast differences and deep-seated core conflicts between the US and Iran, the price trajectory shifted from a decline to a rise, resulting in the market consolidating at a high level.

Geopolitical Game in the Middle East

On July 30, a U.S. airstrike on a residential area on Iran's Qeshm Island resulted in civilian casualties, causing the recently eased tensions between the two sides to deteriorate once again. On August 1, Iran struck a U.S. military base in Jordan; while the U.S. had initially planned a extensive airstrike, it ultimately called off the offensive at the last minute. Indirect talks, mediated by Oman, were held from August 4 to 6 to discuss a temporary navigation plan to the strait. The Middle East conflict remains evaporative, characterized by a tug-of-war between low-intensity military skirmishes and diplomatic mediation; while a full-scale conflict is unlikely to erupt, international crude oil prices are consolidating at high levels.

Propylene costs fell initially before rising

According to the commodity market analysis system of SunSirs, the quoted price of propylene was 8,134.33 RMB/ton on August 7, up 2.61% from the 7,927.67 RMB/ton quoted on August 1; the price direction saw an initial decline followed by a rise. With international crude oil prices consolidating at high levels, propylene prices in August followed this pattern of falling first and then rising.

Market Outlook

Analysts at SunSirs observe that ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and fluctuating crude oil prices—combined with propylene prices that initially fell before rising—have provided cost-side support, causing isooctanol prices to follow a similar pattern of an initial decline followed by a rise. On the demand side, the market remains in a slow season; the plasticizer sector continues to be sluggish, offering limited support to isooctanol prices. Looking ahead, cost factors remain the primary driver of isooctanol price trends. With the US and Iran engaging in a mix of confrontation and negotiation—and a full-scale conflict considered unlikely—crude oil prices are expected to consolidate. Given the anticipated persistence of raw material cost support, isooctanol prices are expected to stabilize at a high level in the near future.
