In a major fire in the horse field industrial park near Bad Sobernheim, a warehouse of the polymer group burned down on Sunday, August 9, 2026. According to the company, there were around 400 tons of PLA plastic (polylactide) in the building.
When the emergency services arrived around 7:30 a.m., the approximately 840 square meter mobile warehouse was already completely in flames. The extinguishing work turned out to be difficult because the densely stored plastic material ignited again and again and partially escaped from the hall in a molten state. At times the fire brigade applied several aquatic environments cannons and applied up to 5,000 liters of extinguishing aquatic environments per minute to the building.
The extinguishing aquatic environments infrastructure on the site of the former Bundeswehr airfield with its own pipeline and substantial cisterns supported the fire fighting. The fire was brought under manage relatively rapidly, however the post-extinguishing work lasted to hours.
According to initial information, the harm to property is estimated at around 600,000 euros. The trigger of the fire was initially unclear.
The Polymer Group, headquartered in Bad Sobernheim, specializes in the modification and compounding of plastics. The group of companies also includes SoBiCo GmbH, which focuses on the research, manufacture and marketing of bioplastics. In the horse field manufacturing park, SoBiCo put a production line to flexible PLA copolymers into operation in 2022, which are offered under the brand name "Plactid" (see also plastic sticker news from July 6th, 2022).
According to a company spokesman, the 400 tons of PLA destroyed or damaged in the fire can be assigned immediately to SoBiCo GmbH.
