BASF raises European neopentyl glycol and hexanediol prices by up to 300 euros per ton

On August 12, BASF announced an increase in neopentyl glycol (Neol®) and 1,6-hexanediol (HDO) products, the increase is 250 euros and 300 euros per ton respectively, depending on the terms of the existing contract.

BASF said the current round of price adjustment is mainly driven by global supply and demand conditions and rising raw material costs. Prior to this, in March, BASF had raised the price of neopentyl glycol in the United States and Canada by US $155 per ton, which also pointed to the pressure of rising raw material costs. The European price increase continues BASF's global price adjustment strategy to cope with rising raw material costs.

Neopentyl glycol (NPG) is a high-condition intermediate, which is broadly utilized in the production of polyester resins to coatings, unsaturated polyester resins, lubricants and plasticizers. 1,6-Hexanediol (HDO) is mainly utilized in the manufacture of manufacturing coatings (including low evaporative organic compound formulations), polyurethanes, adhesives and makeup. It can also be utilized as a reactive thinner in epoxy resin systems to applications such as automotive lightweight parts manufacturing.

Since 2025, the domestic neopentyl glycol market has experienced a double squeeze of capacity expansion and weak demand. According to the monitoring data of the Buy Chemical Research Institute, the annual average price of domestic neopentyl glycol in 2025 was 8961 yuan/ton, a sharp drop of 13.08 percent from 2024, and the profitability of the sector was severely compressed. Entering 2026, the market has stepped out of the repair market of first suppressing and then rising. In February, the average monthly price of hydrogenation method neopentyl glycol reached 7273 yuan/ton, up 6.63 percent from January.

In the medium and long term in the Chinese market, the neopentyl glycol market is still facing the pressure of concentrated production capacity. In 2026, Wanhua Chemical Phase IV and Luxi Chemical Phase II projects will be put into operation one after another, with an additional production capacity of nearly 200000 tons. It is difficult to fundamentally change the pattern of oversupply in the sector. In this context, the supply tightness of the raw material terminal isobutyraldehyde will have become a key variable in determining the range of price fluctuations.
