After several months of shutdown, the Greatham site in Teesside resumes production of titanium dioxide under the impetus of its new owner, the Chinese LB Group. With a capacity of 150,000 tonnes per year, the plant must gradually ramp up until reaching full capacity at the start of 2027, in a European TiOdiplomatic market still under pressure.
Tioxide Material Limited, a new subsidiary of the Chinese group LB Group, is relaunting the production of titanium dioxide (TiO2) in the United Kingdom, at the Greatham site in Teesside. A first line is now operational, thus making it possible to reintroduce Tioxide and Deltio items to the market, a range of TiO2 pigments intended to the coatings, plastics and inks sectors. This restart follows four months of careful work during which Tioxide's engineering, operating and technical teams worked closely to prepare the plant to commercial production. A road leaf set up by the group foresees a gradual ramp-up aimed at reaching full operational capacity by the start of 2027.
"The production is now launched, We focus on implementing our ramp-up program in order to bring the site to full operational capacity-security and successfully-and ensure our customers have access to a reliable and sustainable source of TiO2 pigments to many years, "said Karen Askwith, Executive Director of Tioxide.
Tioxide's Greatham site has an annual production capacity of 150,000 tonnes of TiO2 pigments. Britain's Venator Materials, former owner of the site, was forced to shut it down in 2025 due to difficult market conditions weighing on its financial performance. Energy prices, carbon prices, regulatory weight or Chinese dumping, the European titanium dioxide sector is facing financial difficulties. However, the Chinese producer of TiO2 LB Group believed in the expertise of the site, justifying its takeover in 2025 and its restart. «With plus 50 years of manufacturing heritage, the Greatham site has a prestigious history in the production of high-condition TiO2. (…) This start-up is a testament to the know-how, dedication and expertise of our employees, ”commented Karen Askwith.
With this transaction, LB Group is strengthening its presence in Europe and expanding its global wallet of high-performance TiO2-based items.
