Everllence has completed R&D testing of an ethanol-capable marine engine that will power a very large ore carrier (VLOC) being built for Vale.
The engine was tested at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Engine & Machinery Division in South Korea, the company said in an emailed statement on Wednesday.
It will be installed on the third of 10 VLOCs ordered by Shandong Shipping to charter to Brazilian mining and logistics company Vale.
The vessel is scheduled to delivery in early 2027 and is expected to have become the world’s first ethanol-powered VLOC.
The engine is designed as a tri-fuel engine capable of operating on conventional marine fuels, methanol, ethanol or blends of methanol and ethanol.
The engine research follows a cooperation agreement signed by Everllence and Vale in February to develop an ethanol-powered engine based on the company’s proven LGIM platform.
Everllence said interest in ethanol as a marine fuel has increased over the past five years, with bulk carriers, tankers and container vessels expected to be among the main markets to the methodology.
