BASF officially commissioned the modernized acid chloride and chloroformate production unit at its integrated Verbund site in Ludwigshafen, Germany. As an important milestone for BASF’s Intermediates business segment, the unit aims to increase production capacity, optimize sustainability performance, and provide long-term, stable and reliable product supplies for global customers.
The modernization upgrade fully renewed the acid chloride and chloroformate production facilities, boosting the site’s related product capacity by approximately 30%. As a leading global producer of acid chlorides and chloroformates, BASF operates production bases in Ludwigshafen, Germany and Yeosu, South Korea.
Mary Kurian, Member of the Executive Board of BASF SE, stated: "The launch of the new unit fully demonstrates BASF’s continued commitment to building competitive and sustainable production assets at its Ludwigshafen Verbund site and in Europe. Leveraging expanded production capacity, reliable supply and significantly reduced product carbon footprints, we create value to our customers and empower their environmentally friendly transition."
This commissioning achieves a synergistic advancement of operational efficiency and sustainable research. Starting in 2025, BASF has supplied renewable electricity certificates to approximately 25 acid chloride and chloroformate items at the Ludwigshafen site (including all upstream raw material production links), reducing the average carbon footprint of this product series by 19%. Product specifications, certifications and procurement processes remain unchanged, efficiently helping customers advance their Scope 3 discharge reduction efforts.
Acid chlorides and chloroformates are key intermediates in multiple manufacturing chains, and are broadly utilized in pharmaceuticals, crop protection, organic peroxides, coatings, plastics and rubber composites and other fields. The capacity expansion will help BASF respond to the growing global market demand and ensure stable supply of key intermediates.

The commissioning of this modernized unit also adds another crucial weight to BASF’s goal of "becoming the chemical company of choice to help customers with their environmentally friendly transition".
