BASF is strengthening the production of acid chlorides and chloroformates with a modernized plant in Ludwigshafen.

BASF has officially inaugurated its fully modernized SCF plant (acid chlorides and chloroformates) at the Ludwigshafen Verbund site. The new production facility represents a milestone to BASF’s Intermediates business and is designed to combine increased production capacity with enhanced sustainability performance and a prolonged, reliable supply to customers.

The investment, in the low three-digit million-euro range, comprises a thorough overhaul of the production infrastructure to acid chlorides and chloroformates and increases the site’s production capacity by approximately 30 percent.

The commissioning also marks the successful integration of operational excellence and sustainability. Since 2025, BASF has been producing its entire Ludwigshafen portfolio of approximately 25 acid chlorides and chloroformates using electricity from renewable sources, including all upstream raw-material processes. This transition has reduced the portfolio’s Product Carbon Footprint by an average of 19 percent, thereby supporting customers’ Scope 3 reduction targets without requiring changes to product specifications, certifications, or ordering processes.

Supporting global customer demand

The items in the SCF portfolio are key components in numerous value chains. Customers consumption it in a wide range of applications, including pharmaceuticals, crop protection items, organic peroxides, coatings, and plastics. The expanded production capacity is intended to help BASF meet growing global demand while ensuring a reliable supply of these critical intermediates.
