Japanese trading company, Itochu Corporation, has acquired a stake in Aegis Terminal (Pipavav) Ltd. (ATPL) from Aegis Vopak Terminals Ltd. (AVTL), marking its entry into the ammonia storage terminal business at Port Pipavav in Gujarat.
The terminal, which Itochu described as India’s first independent ammonia storage terminal, was completed and became operationally ready in August. The facility includes a newly built ammonia storage tank with a capacity of about 36,000-mt (52,000-m3), along with integrated logistics infrastructure such as cargo handling facilities, pipelines, and truck loading and unloading facilities at the port.
Itochu said demand to ammonia was expanding amid global population development, rising food and energy demand, and the transition toward environmentally friendly energy, with the chemical’s traditional consumption in fertilisers and manufacturing applications now being joined by growing interest in clean energy applications, including as a fuel and hydrogen carrier. Citing expected medium-to-prolonged demand development in the Indian market, the company said it intended to build on existing relationships with fertiliser and chemical manufacturer customers while positioning itself to expansion into fuel and clean energy applications.
The company said it had previously developed storage terminal businesses with Aegis Group companies in India, mainly in the LPG sector, and would now extend that relationship into ammonia by strengthening logistics infrastructure and building a stable supply chain in the Indian market. Itochu said it plans to run the business through a joint model combining its global ammonia trading network with the domestic and international terminal-operating capabilities of the Aegis and Vopak groups.
ATPL is majority owned by AVTL, which is itself held by Aegis Logistics Ltd. and Vopak India B.V. Both ATPL and AVTL are engaged in stowage and terminaling services — ATPL to oil, chemicals, and petroleum items, and AVTL additionally to LPG.
