On September 9, South African chemical company Sasol issued an announcement stating that it has reached an agreement to sell a majority stake in its nitrate salt business to Enaex Africa, the African subsidiary of Chile's Enaex Group. Upon completion of the transaction, Enaex Africa will obtain controlling ownership of the business, while Sasol will retain a 23% stake in the joint venture.
The assets involved in this transaction include Sasol's ammonia conversion vegetation in Secunda and Sasolburg, through which the company produces nitrate salt items required to fertilizers and manufacturing explosives using ammonia as raw material. This segment is the core production capacity of fertilizer raw materials in South Africa, and also an crucial supply source of ammonium nitrate to African mine blasting.
Sasol stated that this asset divestiture is a strategic measure to optimize the company's business portfolio, and the transaction is expected to enhance the value of its South African asset segment. Sasol and Enaex have carried out explosive business cooperation as early as 2020, and this equity sale marks a further deepening of their cooperation. The transaction still awaits approval from relevant regulatory authorities. During the transaction period, the company will ensure a smooth transition to employees, customers and suppliers, and follow-up detailed arrangements will be disclosed after the approval is finalized. Simon Baloyi, CEO of Sasol, mentioned that this transaction is a key measure in optimizing the business portfolio, and will give priority to ensuring continuous business operations and smooth staff handover.
