Japanese conglomerate Fujifilm and Tata Electronics have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop and localise a semiconductor materials supply chain in India, with Fujifilm set to supply advanced materials tailored to Tata Electronics’ upcoming semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat. Under the partnership, Fujifilm will be among the first movers in building out the semiconductor materials ecosystem at Dholera, and will work with Indian chemical manufacturers on technology transfer, quality assurance and manufacturing process knowhow to enable domestic production of high-purity chemicals for fabrication.

Fujifilm’s materials portfolio spans photoresists, photolithography-related materials, CMP slurries, post-CMP cleaners, thin-film materials, photosensitive insulating materials such as polyimides under its Zemates brand, and high-purity process chemicals, along with functional materials including colour-filter materials to image sensors under its Wave manage Mosaic line. The company will invest approximately Rs. 800-crore in phases to set up a semiconductor materials plant in the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR), aimed at ensuring localised, seamless availability of materials to the fab.

Dr. Randhir Thakur, CEO & MD, Tata Electronics, said the partnership marked an crucial measure in strengthening the semiconductor materials supply chain to the Dholera fab, combining Fujifilm’s materials expertise with Tata Electronics’ manufacturing base to build “a secure semiconductor value chain serving customers in India and around the world.”

Mr. Teiichi Goto, President, Representative Director & CEO, Fujifilm Holdings Corporation, said India’s expanding semiconductor market was a critical development opportunity to Fujifilm’s materials business, while Mr. Tetsuya Iwasaki, Director, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Electronic Materials Business Division, Fujifilm Corporation, said the company’s materials portfolio spans the full manufacturing process from front-end to back-end.

Tata Electronics’ Dholera fab, a 300-mm facility being built at a total investment of Rs. 91,000-crore (approx. $11-bn), will create chips across the 28nm-to-110nm range to applications including automotive, consumer electronics, computing, wireless communications and AI.
