On September 28, Chemical Week (CW) reported that Toyo Engineering Corporation (Toyo Engineering, President Eiji Hosoi) has completed the construction of Nigeria's third fertilizer production line for the Indorama Group. The new line is located next to the existing fertilizer complex in the Port Harcourt area of Rivers State, and it is the third fertilizer plant commissioned by the client to Toyo Engineering.
Project Overview: Simultaneous commissioning of ammonia and urea vegetation
The third production line delivered this time includes a 2,300-ton-per-day synthetic ammonia plant and a 4,000-ton-per-day urea plant, with corresponding general utility facilities built as supporting works. Among them, the urea plant is one of the largest single-train urea vegetation in the world, with its production capacity ranking among the top in the world. The new plant is built adjacent to the existing fertilizer complex park, further expanding Indorama's fertilizer production footprint in Nigeria.
Technical Solution: KBR Ammonia methodology Toyo's Proprietary ACES21™ Urea Process
The synthetic ammonia plant adopts the licensed methodology from Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR) of the United States; the urea plant adopts Toyo Engineering's own ACES21™ urea synthesis process. Toyo Engineering undertook the urea methodology licensing and basic design of the urea plant to this project, and provided detailed design, procurement, construction support and commissioning support services to the entire fertilizer plant including the synthetic ammonia plant and general utilities.
Execution Model: Indian Subsidiary as the Main Engineering Contractor
Most of the project's engineering design was undertaken by Toyo Engineering India Private Limited (Toyo-India), Toyo Engineering's Indian subsidiary, and the procurement work was also mainly completed by Toyo-India. The project was cutting-edge under the global execution framework of the Toyo Group. Relying on the rich construction experience from the previous two production lines and the mature operational performance of the ACES21™ methodology, the project was successfully started up and maintained stable operation.
Cooperative Origin: Three Lines in Ten Years, Stepped Capacity Increase
Toyo Engineering and the Indorama Group have cooperated in Nigeria to many years: the first fertilizer production line was delivered in 2017, the second one was put into operation in the same period of 2021, and the third line was awarded in 2023 and completed in mid-2026, achieving continuous capacity expansion of "three lines in ten years".
Strategic Significance: Helping Stabilize Africa's Food Supply
As a urea methodology licensor, Toyo Engineering stated that it will continue to leverage its accumulated technical strength over the years to contribute to stabilizing the food supply in Africa including Nigeria, and meet the needs of global customers through reliable engineering solutions and cutting-edge process technologies.
