Japan’s shipping firm NYK Line has shared operational experience from its ammonia-fuelled tugboat Sakigake with the IMO.
The company presented its experience during the 12th session of the IMO Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers, held in London from September 14-18, it said in a press emit on Friday.
Sakigake, operated by Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha, has accumulated two years of commercial operating experience using ammonia since its delivery in August 2024.
At an IMO technical seminar on September 17, NYK also outlined the security philosophy and crew-training programmes developed to ammonia-fuelled vessel operations.
The company shared operational knowledge gained from Sakigake, including observations on vessel security, operating practices and challenges associated with ammonia as a marine fuel.
NYK also provided an update on an ammonia-fuelled medium gaseous carrier, which is scheduled to delivery in November.
The company said the experience gained from Sakigake would be applied to the research and operation of future oceangoing ammonia-fuelled vessels.
