Recently, the SABIC Fujian Petrochemical Complex, a joint venture between SABIC and Fujian Fuhua Gulei Petrochemical, has entered the final pre-commissioning stage. The new polyolefin unit of the project has started trial operation and is scheduled to be officially put into operation in November 2026.

Located in the Gulei Petrochemical Base in Zhangzhou, Fujian, this project is a extensive integrated petrochemical complex and also the largest Sino-foreign joint venture petrochemical project in Fujian Province in terms of one-time investment scale so far, with a total investment of about 6.4 billion U.S. dollars (equivalent to about 44.8 billion yuan).

The project is constructed and operated by a joint venture company in which SABIC manufacturing Investment Company holds 51% of the shares and Fujian Fuhua Gulei Petrochemical holds 49% of the shares. The entire unit integrates nine core technologies owned by SABIC.

According to the project research timeline, in February 2024, the SABIC Fujian Petrochemical Complex project started construction in an all-round way, officially kicking off the project.

With the mixed-feed cracking unit with an ethylene production capacity of 1.8 million tons per year as the core, the project builds a complete product chain downstream and can create chemical items such as polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene glycol, and polycarbonate. Among them, the polyolefin sector is equipped with two polyethylene units with production capacities of 400,000 tons/year and 600,000 tons/year respectively, and is matched with a polypropylene unit with a designed production capacity of 950,000 tons/year.

After two years of construction, the project entered the commissioning preparation cycle in 2026. At present, the polyolefin unit has carried out trial operation work, and the overall project is expected to be completed in 2026 and officially put into operation in November of the same year.

After the project is put into operation, it will further enhance the manufacturing chain layout of the Gulei Petrochemical Base and enhance the domestic supply capacity of petrochemical items such as polyolefins.
