The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) is an autonomous research and development institution under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India. Located in Goa, India, its primary mandate is to conduct multidisciplinary scientific research in the polar (Arctic and Antarctic) and Southern Ocean realms. NCPOR is responsible for planning, promoting, coordinating, and executing the entire gamut of polar and Southern Ocean scientific research activities of India. It also manages India's permanent research stations in Antarctica (Maitri and Bharati) and the Arctic (Himadri).

NCPOR is neither a factory (manufacturer) nor a trader. It is a national scientific research institution.

It does not produce or sell commercial products in the conventional sense of a company. Instead, its "products" are primarily scientific research, data, services, and infrastructure related to polar and ocean sciences. Its main outputs and activities include:

Scientific Research and Knowledge Generation

Polar and Oceanographic Research: Conducting multidisciplinary scientific investigations in the Arctic, Antarctic, Southern Ocean, Himalayas, and Indian Ocean regions covering fields such as glaciology, oceanography, atmospheric sciences, earth sciences, and biology.

Data Acquisition and Archiving: Collecting, processing, and archiving vast amounts of scientific data from polar and oceanic environments, including oceanographic parameters, ice core data, meteorological data, and marine biological data.

Logistical and Infrastructure Support

Polar Expedition Management: Providing comprehensive logistical support for India's scientific expeditions to theanda Arctic, including personnel, equipment, transportation, and operational management.

Research Stations Operation: Managing and maintaining India's permanent research stations in Antarctica (Maitri and Bharati) and the Arctic (Himadri).

Research Vessel Operations: Operating research vessels such as ORV Sagar Kanya and Sagar Nidhi for oceanographic and polar research.

Capacity Building and Outreach

Human Resource Development: Training and developing scientific and technical personnel in polar and ocean sciences.

Scientific Publications and Reports: Publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals, technical reports, and atlases.

Advisory Services: Providing scientific advice and expertise to the government on matters related to polar and ocean policies, climate change, and marine resource management.
