Indonesia to accelerate the layout of floating solar power, the target of new 14GW installed capacity
Indonesia is actively engaged in the development of floating solar power projects to further promote the development of its renewable energy industry. The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources stated that the government is expanding from large-scale rooftop solar projects to more potential floating solar projects, aiming to make full use of the country's abundant water resources.
Director-General of New Energy, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation of the sector revealed that Indonesia has formulated a strategic plan and is inviting foreign investors to participate in the development of floating solar projects. Many dams in Indonesia provide unique conditions for the construction of floating solar power plants. The government plans to add 14GW of floating solar power installed capacity to accelerate the rise of the domestic solar industry.
At present, Indonesia has a floating solar project in operation, that is, the Chilata floating solar power station in West Java. The power station has been connected to the grid since November 2023, with an installed capacity of up to 192 megawatts peak (MWp), enough to meet the clean energy needs of about 50000 households. It is estimated that the power station can reduce carbon emissions by 214000 tons per year, making a positive contribution to Indonesia's environmental protection.
In order to further expand the scale of floating solar projects, Indonesia's national power company has launched a deep cooperation with a new energy enterprise in the United Arab Emirates. The two sides signed a cooperation agreement in Abu Dhabi on April 8, 2025, to expand the Zirata floating solar power plant and explore the possibility of developing more floating solar projects in other parts of Indonesia. Under a memorandum of understanding signed by the two sides, the cooperation will cover an in-depth study of the project development potential of the Jatigde Reservoir in Sumedang County, West Java.
