Company Introduction:

BOTAS (Boru Hatları ile Petrol Taşıma Anonim Şirketi) is Turkey's state-owned crude oil and natural gas pipeline operator and trading company. Established in 1974, it initially focused on crude oil pipeline operations. In 1987, its scope expanded significantly to include natural gas activities, making it the primary entity responsible for natural gas import, transmission, storage, and wholesale distribution throughout Turkey. BOTAS plays a critical role in ensuring Turkey's energy security by managing the national natural gas network, which comprises an extensive system of pipelines, LNG import terminals, and underground gas storage facilities. It facilitates the import of natural gas from various international sources and its subsequent distribution to local distribution companies and large industrial consumers across the country.

Classification:

Neither a factory nor a pure trader. BOTAS is an integrated energy infrastructure and supply company. Its core responsibilities involve the operation and management of national natural gas and crude oil pipelines, as well as storage and regasification facilities. While it conducts substantial wholesale trading of natural gas (importing and selling it domestically), this activity is part of its broader mandate as a national energy utility and infrastructure operator rather than that of a standalone trading firm. It does not produce or extract gas itself but manages its transportation, storage, and supply across the nation.
