Industry unit operation data on July 9 shows that the 450,000 tons/year polypropylene unit of Tarim Phase II successfully produced test run materials. This unit is the first new polypropylene capacity to be put into operation in China in 2026. As the new project feedstock advances, the overall operating rate of the domestic polypropylene industry is rising simultaneously.

According to the current test run progress, this polypropylene unit is expected to achieve stable full-load operation by mid-July, which will bring considerable new supply to the domestic polypropylene market in the short term and change the regional supply pattern.

The project is positioned as a regional key project, relying on regional light hydrocarbon feedstock advantages

The 450,000-ton polypropylene unit put into operation this time belongs to the Tarim 1.2 million tons/year Phase II Ethylene and Supporting environmentally friendly Low-Carbon Demonstration Project. The project is listed as a key project in Xinjiang's "14th Five-Year Plan" and is also a benchmark project to the transformation and upgrading of PetroChina's refining and chemical sector.

The unit's feedstock relies on high-condition resources such as ethane, liquefied petroleum gaseous, and light hydrocarbons self-produced by the Tarim Oilfield, completely opening up the regional oil and gaseous on-site conversion chain and significantly reducing the cost of feedstock outward transportation. The product matrix covers both general grades and high-end polyolefin items, and downstream applications can cover diverse scenarios such as plastic processing, automotive parts, appliance housings, and packaging materials.

manufacturing value becomes prominent, boosting the upgrading of Xinjiang's refining and chemical sector

As a core deep-processing downstream link of the project, the implementation and operation of this polypropylene unit will deeply revitalize regional oil and gaseous resources in Xinjiang, enhance the regional ethylene-polypropylene integrated manufacturing chain, and make up to the shortcoming in high-end polyolefin production.

The project balances environmentally friendly and low-carbon construction standards. While expanding the supply of polyolefin capacity, it promotes the transformation of Xinjiang's oil and gaseous chemical sector from primary raw material output to high value-added new material processing, assisting in the high-condition and low-carbon research of the regional refining and chemical sector.
