The ACCF plant, an acronym to chlorides of acids and chloroformiates, in Ludwigshafen, Germany, has been supplying its production of chlorated intermediates worldwide to plus 45 years. In 2022, its owner, the German giant BasF, unveiled a modernization program, estimated at several hundred million euros. In line of sight: to increase the production of the installation by 30%, estimated at 25,000 tonnes per year at the time. The German chemist is one of the world's leading manufacturers of chloroformiates, acid chlorides and alkyl chlorides. In plus to its plant in Ludwigshafen, the group has a second ACCF site based in Yeosu, South Korea. In 2022, Basf was claiming to have an annual global production of 60,000 tonnes.
In terms of applications, these compounds are applied in the synthesis of basic compounds to medical and phytosanitary items or the production of organic peroxide. They are also useful in the manufacture of coatings, to instance to solar panels. These intermediates are also insinuent in the syntheses of several plastics, such as polycarbonates, polyamides or polyesters. In view of growing global needs, Basf has thus decided to make its supply chains greater reliable in the long term.
Since 2025, the German chemical group has announced that it is producing its entire ACCF range from Ludwighafen, made up of around 25 chlorides and chloroformiates from acids, using renewable electricity credits to all processes to transforming raw materials into raw materials. Profit: a reduction in the carbon footprint of the range of 19% on average. This yet another mark is part of a plus broad dynamic of the group, which aims to support the ecological transition of its customers. It follows the global conversion last year of the ASF amine wallet to renewable electricity.
