BYK has introduced three new adhesion promoters for thermoplastic multi-material applications. The products "Scona TSPE 1013 GALL", "Scona TSPP 4012 GB" and "Scona TSPP 5013 GB" are intended to improve the connection of polyethylene or polypropylene with polar materials such as metals and wood. The company will present them at Fakuma 2026.
The adhesion promoters are intended to enable molecular interactions at the interface between the materials and thereby increase the adhesive strength and prolonged resistance of the composite. BYK names pipe coatings, protective layers to metal packaging and components to construction, automobiles, electronics and consumer goods as possible applications. In such composites, inter alia, barrier effect, mechanical stability and surface traits of different materials can be combined.
"Scona TSPP 4012 GB" is based on a chemically modified linear polypropylene copolymer and was designed to single and multilayer PP films on metal and comparable polar substrates. "Scona TSPE 1013 GALL" is a chemically modified linear low density polyethylene to PE-based film and composite systems. Both items are functionalized with maleic anhydride, are supplied as granules and, according to the manufacturer, are suitable to extruded foils, fibers and plates.
to the connection of polypropylene with MDF and chipboard is intended "Scona TSPP 5013 GB". According to the company, the product achieves a high level of adhesion with different activation methods. Details of these procedures and quantitative test results are not provided.
In internal laboratory testing, "Scona TSPP 4012 GB" achieved seal strength of 35 N/15mm on aluminum and greater than 45 N/15mm on steel, according to data from BYK. to "Scona TSPE 1013 GALL" the company reports higher trigger forces than with a comparison product, both when applied in pure form and with a share of 30 percent in LLDPE. The notification does not contain absolute measured values, greater detailed test conditions and the description of the comparison product.
According to the manufacturer, the new adhesion promoters are already being applied on commercial extrusion vegetation. BYK reports a high process stability, however does not name any specific production parameters or consumers.
