Recently, I opened up—unboxed as they say–a new Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet. To my surprise, all the packaging, including a wrap inside the box around the object itself, seemed to be paper based. The only plastic material was the seal on the box. This isn’t the only example of paper replacing plastic that I’ve noticed recently.

The direction is a reversal, albeit a modest one thus far, of the ascension of plastics that has occurred since the 1950s. And it isn’t difficult to draw a connection to the plastics sector’s recent struggles with sustainability. Mechanical recycling vegetation and plastics pyrolysis vegetation are closing in Europe and the US because of economic struggles.
