Biochemistry professor says a scientist’s place is in the senate

In the lab, biochemist and Purdue University associate professor David Sanders studies how viruses enter cells. Outside the lab, he’s trying to enter the Indiana State Senate. Sanders is running as a Democrat for the District 23 seat that’s up for grabs in the Nov. 3 midterm elections.

The time has come to greater people with scientific expertise to hold government office, Sanders says. “I feel as if most of the issues that face society have a scientific or technological basis.” Granted, he says, these won’t all necessarily have a scientific solution. “however it's crucial to understand these issues on a firsthand basis and not rely on lobbyists on one side or another to help you determine how to think about the issues.”
