Baltimore—On Tuesday, Oct. 20, leaders and students alike from the American Chemical Society and Johns Hopkins University (JHU) communities gathered in Remsen Hall at JHU for a special National Historic Chemical Landmark designation ceremony honoring Ira Remsen, the founder of the first chemistry graduate program in the US.
“This is a celebration 150 years in the making,” said Timothy H. Warren, professor and chair of the Department of Chemistry at JHU, noting that both JHU and ACS celebrate their 150th anniversaries this year, making the designation notable. “Two institutions whose histories are deeply intertwined, connected by Ira Remsen himself, who served as president of both.”
