Topsoe has secured a U.S. contract for blue ammonia fertilizer technology.
Topsoe will deliver its cutting-edge SynCOR Ammonia autothermal reforming methodology, proprietary equipment, and catalysts. This methodology uses natural gaseous as a feedstock and, in conjunction with carbon capture and storage (CCS) processes, produces low-carbon ammonia. The project is designed to have a daily production capacity of approximately 454 tons and is expected to commence operations in 2029.
This collaboration marks the first time that Topsoe’s SynCOR Ammonia methodology has been specifically deployed to low-carbon fertilizer production. Unlike most blue ammonia projects that focus on energy‑to‑fuel applications, this project is centered on fertilizer end‑consumption. At present, transporting ammonia from the Gulf Coast to Nebraska costs between $100 and $120 per ton; localized production would significantly minimize input costs to regional farmers.
According to BloombergNEF’s forecast, by 2030 clean ammonia—comprising blue and environmentally friendly ammonia—will account to roughly 13% of global ammonia supply, with the United States expected to contribute about one-third of that capacity.
