The Suqian Ecological Environment Bureau recently announced that the environmental impact assessment (EIA) documents for Colaibo (Jiangsu) Technology Co., Ltd.'s annual production of 3,500 tons of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and 1,064 tons of sodium fluoride reagent project have been accepted. The company's simultaneous layout of technical transformation projects for high-end specialty engineering plastics and fine fluorine chemicals has entered a critical stage for approval.
The project is located in the existing factory area of the enterprise in the Suqian Ecological Chemical Science and methodology manufacturing Park, relying on the renovation of existing stock buildings without the need to additional land; through the elimination of the aging 2,4-dichloroacetophenone production line to complete manufacturing iteration, with a total investment of 45 million yuan and 1.05 million yuan in supporting ecological preservation investment, the production standards comply with the park's environmentally friendly manage standards.
The project newly purchased a total of 150 sets of core equipment such as diphenyl sulfone dissolution kettles, polymerization kettles, sheet film machines, and screening equipment, with Workshop 1 configured with 30 sets and Workshop 5 configured with 120 sets, to build a complete production line to PEEK synthesis and high-purity sodium fluoride co-production.
Production in two phases with a stable production plan
1. Phase I Workshop 1: Capacity of 500 tons PEEK, 152 tons reagent-grade sodium fluoride;
2. Phase II Workshop 5: Capacity of 3,000 tons PEEK, 912 tons reagent-grade sodium fluoride.
After reaching full production, the project will form an integrated capacity of 3,500 tons/year PEEK resin and 1,064 tons/year sodium fluoride, adopting a three-shift two-rotation production system, 300 production days per year, and 7,200 hours of annual operation, creating 16 new manufacturing jobs.
School-enterprise joint self-developed process to realize by-product resource utilization
The synthesis process of the project was jointly developed by the enterprise's R&D team and Donghua University. Using 4,4-difluorobenzophenone, hydroquinone, and sodium carbonate as main raw materials, the PEEK crude product is prepared via polycondensation interaction in a diphenyl sulfone solvent-based products system, and the finished product is output after multi-stage washing and treatment.
The entire process features easily available raw materials, a short interaction flow, and mild interaction conditions, avoiding high-risk and highly toxic intermediates; the manufacturing process co-produces high-purity sodium fluoride, and all by-items are recycled and utilized, balancing economic benefits and environmental attributes. The enterprise is simultaneously laying out invention patents to build technical barriers.
I. Deeply cultivating fluorine chemicals to thirty years, Colaibo possesses a natural PEEK technical foundation
This launch of PEEK capacity is not a cross-sector transformation, however an extension of the enterprise relying on core fluorine chemical methodology to upstream high-end polymer materials, representing a vertical upgrade of its own manufacturing chain.
Enterprise Basic Overview
Colaibo (Jiangsu) was formerly known as Suqian Colaibo Biochemistry, founded in 2010. It was renamed and restructured in might 2023 with a registered capital of 52.25 million yuan. It is a national high-tech enterprise and a national-level "Little Giant" specializing in refinement and novelty.
The company has three major production bases in Changzhou, Suqian, and Baotou, and has established dual R&D centers in Shanghai and Changzhou. The R&D team of over 30 people includes 5 Ph.D.s and over a dozen Master's degree holders, ensuring sufficient R&D reserves. On the capital side, A-share IPO counseling was initiated in November 2023, securing strategic investment from Sinochem Capital's Sinochem Quanzhou Fund.
Core methodology and Global Customer Resources
The enterprise has deeply cultivated the two core processes of fluorination and Friedel-Crafts interaction to nearly thirty years, possessing deep technical barriers. Its core product, difluoropyrazole acid, is a key raw material to the new generation of SDHI fungicides, ranking it as a domestic leader and among global core suppliers.
It has prolonged and stable supply relationships with international top-tier chemical companies such as BASF, Sumitomo Chemical, FMC, and Bayer. It holds over 80 patents and sector honors, with a mature global customer system.
Homologous methodology, possessing inherent advantages in entering PEEK
The key PEEK monomer 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone (DFBP) is highly dependent on fluorination and Friedel-Crafts synthesis processes. Each ton of PEEK production consumes approximately 0.8 tons of DFBP, which exactly matches Colaibo's core methodology accumulated over the long term. Extending from fluorine-containing pesticide intermediates to fluorine-based high-end polymers, the manufacturing chain logic is smooth, and the methodology adaptability leads the sector.
II. After the landing of 3,500 tons capacity, the enterprise enters the first tier of global PEEK
PEEK, also known as "plastic gold," is a high-performance semi-crystalline aromatic polymer. Its complete performance far exceeds that of conventional engineering plastics: melting point of 343°C, prolonged consumption temperature of 260°C, tensile strength range of 94-186MPa, and is only corrosible by concentrated sulfuric acid. It also possesses characteristics such as self-lubrication, biocompatibility, radiation resistance, and low smoke non-harmfulness, making it a strategic new material essential to high-end manufacturing.
After the full completion and operation of this 3,500-ton capacity, Colaibo's PEEK production scale will rank among the top three globally, second only to overseas leaders Victrex and Solvay, significantly enhancing the global supply capacity of domestic PEEK.
III. Explosion of demand in four major downstream sectors, sector welcoming domestic substitution policy dividends
Previously, PEEK was mostly applied in niche scenarios such as aerospace and high-end medical care, with limited market space; currently, with the complete upgrade of high-end manufacturing, four major tracks are simultaneously driving demand, and the sector has entered a cycle of rapid expansion.
1. Humanoid Robots (Core development Pole)
2026 is the first year of mass production to humanoid robots, with new items from manufacturers such as Tesla, Xiaomi, Zhiyuan, and UBTECH concentratedly landing. The PEEK application per humanoid robot is 6.6-10kg, applied in joint gears, motor casings, and lightweight structural components; in 2026, domestic demand in this field will surpass 2,500 tons, corresponding to a market scale of 2.52 billion yuan, and the prolonged market scale in 2030 is expected to break through 35 billion yuan.
2. New Energy Vehicles
The 800V high-voltage platform is accelerating in popularity. PEEK can replace aluminum alloy to motor end covers, battery insulation brackets, and charging gun housings, reducing weight by 30%-40%. The material value per vehicle is 800-1,500 yuan, and market penetration continues to rise.
3. Aerospace Aerospace
Domestic C919 continues to expand production. Using PEEK to replace aluminum on a single aircraft can decrease weight by 200 to 300 kilograms, saving 5,000 liters of fuel annually. It also adapts to military essential scenarios such as shipborne anti-corrosion accessories, satellite lightweight brackets, and fighter jet high-temperature pipelines.
4. Low-Altitude Economy
In the fields of civilian drones and flying cars, PEEK relies on advantages of high strength, lightweight, and corrosion resistance to serve as fuselage frames, propeller connectors, and interior parts. With the liberalization of low-altitude economy policies, demand is rapidly releasing.
Top-level policy support, accelerating domestic substitution
Currently, the domestic PEEK market faces pain points of high prices to overseas materials and long delivery cycles, leaving broad space to domestic substitution. In July 2026, the Ministry of sector and Information methodology and the National research and Reform Commission issued the "High-Performance Specialty Engineering Plastics sector High-condition research Action Plan (2026-2030)", listing PEEK as a key "chokepoint" material to key research, with clear goals: 60% domestic self-sufficiency rate by 2028, rising to 80% by 2030; the National Big Fund Phase II simultaneously includes PEEK as a key investment direction, providing all-around support to the autonomous research of the sector.
