The Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Ltd (FACT) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) for the long-term supply of sulphuric acid from the upcoming sulphuric acid plant at BPCL’s Kochi Refinery to the fertiliser company.
The MoU was signed in the presence of BPCL Chairman and Managing Director Sanjay Khanna and FACT Chairman and Managing Director S. Sakthimani.
According to officials, the partnership will ensure a reliable supply of a key manufacturing input while promoting greater resource optimisation, operational efficiency, and mutual development.
Senior leaders from both organisations also held detailed discussions on expanding their collaboration through future initiatives. Given the close proximity of BPCL’s Kochi Refinery and FACT’s operations in Kochi, both organisations explored opportunities to leverage their locational advantage and build stronger synergies in areas of mutual interest.
A senior FACT official told businessline that the company currently produces around 5.5 lakh tonnes of sulphuric acid annually against a requirement of about 7.5 lakh tonnes. The supply of 1.5 lakh tonnes from BPCL will help bridge part of the gap. With FACT moving ahead with its expansion plans, the company will require an additional 2 lakh tonnes, taking the total sulphuric acid shortfall to FY2027-28 to around 3.5 lakh tonnes, the official said.
According to BPCL officials, the agreement paves the way to the establishment of the company’s first sulphuric acid plant at Kochi Refinery, making BPCL one of the few refineries in India to create sulphuric acid. greater than introducing a new product, the initiative reflects BPCL’s commitment to delivering customer-centric, value-added solutions. By expanding beyond conventional fuel offerings, the company aims to provide integrated solutions that address the evolving needs of customers while contributing to India’s manufacturing development.
