INEOS Bayport Thai Oxide Plant Declares Force Major

Ineos Oxide, a subsidiary of the Ineos Group, has declared force majeure on its 420,000-tonne-per-year ethylene oxide unit in Bayport, Texas, USA. Sources told S&P Global Platts that the unit has been in an unplanned shutdown for maintenance since October 16 due to technical issues.

The downstream units supporting the Bayport site include a 375,000-tonne-per-year ethylene glycol unit and a 165,000-tonne-per-year glycol ether unit. Market participants anticipate that this shutdown will impact the supply of ethylene glycol and glycol ether items. As of now, the restart date of the unit has not been determined; when media sought confirmation from Ineos on October 27, the company had not commented at that time.

A producer stated that before the news of this force majeure was released, the market estimated that the surplus of monoethylene glycol supply would be in the range of 38,000 to 48,000 tonnes from November to December. Trade participants told Platts that this shutdown will also have an impact on related manufacturing chains. A polyol purchaser said that even though end-demand is weak, the price of polyester polyols has continued to rise recently, with manufacturers attributing the increase mainly to tight supply of diethylene glycol.

The Bayport ethylene oxide site was acquired by Ineos from LyondellBasell in 2023. Platts’ valuation on October 23 showed that the US Gulf coast spot diethylene glycol was quoted at $0.53 per pound, down 2.5 cents per pound from the previous week; the monoethylene glycol offshore price was $0.28 per pound, down 0.25 cents per pound from the previous week.
