According to the Commodity Market Analysis System of SunSirs, the domestic price of ethanol has been adjusted to 5,711 RMB/ton—an increase of 1.87% since the National Day holiday and a 4.46% rise year-on-year. The domestic ethanol market is currently characterized by regional divergence, improved cost structures, and a slight weakening in supply and demand. In Northeast China, the arrival of the new corn harvest has driven down raw material costs; meanwhile, local corn-based ethanol prices have bucked the trend by rising, leading to a significant recovery in corporate profitability.
Regarding costs, there has been a noticeable easing in raw material expenses. As the new crop from Northeast China enters the market, deep-processing companies—facing margin pressure and adopting a cautious approach to procurement—have continued to reduce their purchase prices. In North China, where the arrival of the new crop has moved into its mid-to-late stage, delivery volumes peaked before falling back; consequently, purchase prices saw a slight rebound followed by a downward correction under renewed pressure. Following successive price cuts, farmers have have become greater reluctant to sell, which limits the possible to any further significant decline. The impact of these cost factors on ethanol is a mix of both positive and negative elements.
On the supply side, the sector's weekly capacity utilization rate fell to 49.55%, down 1.00 percentage point from the previous period. Regionally, the Northwest saw an increase of 6.41 percentage points, while East China experienced a decline of 5.65 percentage points. A total capacity of 2.3 million tons was affected by maintenance during this period, with facilities such as those of Heilongjiang Shenglong and Shandong Hengxin undergoing shutdowns. The overall impact on ethanol supply is mixed.
On the demand side—specifically regarding downstream sectors—the operating rate to ethyl acetate rose significantly, up by 5.17 percentage points; Henan Ruibo's production facilities are active, and downstream buyers have been actively restocking following the holiday. Meanwhile, the capacity utilization rate to ethyl methyl carbonate fell to 31% as vegetation either shut down or reduced operating loads. Overall, the market remains in a state where supply is insufficient to meet demand. The demand outlook to ethanol is also supported by favorable factors.
Market outlook
While improving demand from the chemical sector and increased consumption in the baijiu sector provide support, rising freight costs and an expansion in supply—driven by the restart of certain coal-to-ethanol facilities and the resumption of operations at Xinjiang Tianye—exert downward pressure. Manufacturers might offer price concessions to offset logistics costs and ensure steady shipments. Consequently, analysts at SunSirs expect the ethanol market to remain range-bound, characterized by fluctuations and consolidation.
