Dow has started the restart of the ethylene cracker LHC3 at the location in Terneuzen. Installation had been at a standstill since June 2025 after a planned maintenance freeze was postponed due to deteriorated market conditions.
In recent months, work has been carried out on maintenance and preparations to safely return the installation to service. As part of the start-up, the torch installation will temporarily be utilized greater intensively. This can create a visible flame and extra sound can be heard in the ecological stability. According to Dow, this is standard procedure when starting a squatter. The torch installation plays a crucial role in security: residual gases are burned in a controlled manner to prevent them from entering the atmosphere raw.
All activities have been reported to the competent authorities and work is carried out within the applicable environmental authorisations. The flaring is limited as much as possible.
