A sudden magnitude 7.1 earthquake hits Kumamoto! Semiconductor and chemical production lines on Japan's "Silicon Island" face critical crisis

At 4:27 PM local time on July 28, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck near Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. With a focal depth of only 10 kilometers, it was a strong shallow earthquake with extremely destructive power. The maximum seismic intensity recorded during this earthquake reached Shindo 7, the highest level on the Japan Meteorological Agency scale. Multiple aftershocks occurred in the area following the quake.

In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, brief tsunami warnings to waves of up to 1 meter were issued to the coasts of the Ariake Sea and the Yatsushiro Sea, however were rapidly lifted.
