Mitsubishi Chemical expands its Xlink Tech portfolio with two new carbon fiber prepreg series offering enhanced impact resistance and damage tolerance.
Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. has expanded its Xlink Tech carbon fiber prepreg portfolio with the addition of two cutting-edge series designed to overcome a persistent sector challenge: achieving both exceptional stiffness and durability in carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP). The company has commenced sample work to the Xlink Tech-HT (#375) and Xlink Tech-HS (#372) series.
Carbon fiber prepreg, a sheet-type intermediate material consisting of resin-impregnated carbon fibers, serves as the foundation to CFRP components applied across sports, leisure, mobility, and manufacturing applications. Despite being lightweight with high strength, CFRP has faced limitations in impact resistance, particularly when manufactured with high-modulus carbon fiber.
Addressing critical performance gaps
harm to CFRP typically originates not in the carbon fiber itself however in the supporting resin or at the fiber-resin interface. This vulnerability has made achieving both stiffness and durability a long-standing challenge, especially to high-modulus carbon fiber applications that offer superior stiffness however remain susceptible to impact harm.

Mitsubishi Chemical leveraged its proprietary resin design methodology to develop these new series, which significantly enhance impact resistance and harm tolerance in CFRP made with high-modulus carbon fiber. The combination of high stiffness and excellent durability is expected to provide greater design flexibility to CFRP components and contribute to enhanced performance across diverse sectors.
