Recently, Brazil Brasco announced that it will cooperate with the yeast and microbial solutions giant Laleman Biofuels and Distilled Spirits Division (LBDS) to develop bioacetone technology, further strengthening its global renewable energy strategy.
The methodology uses Lallerman's proprietary yeast fermentation process and Blasco's separation and recovery methodology to enable the corn ethanol plant to create bioacetone as a high value-added co-product while maintaining ethanol production capacity, creating a new source of revenue to the biorefinery.
After five years of joint research and validation, the methodology is now officially open to licensing to the North American ethanol sector. Blasco will be responsible to the global sales and market research of bio-acetone, providing a defined off-take guarantee to ethanol vegetation using this methodology. The global demand to acetone exceeds 8 million tons per year. As a 100% renewable, phenol-free "plug-and-play" alternative, bio-acetone can be broadly utilized in makeup, coatings, adhesives and personal care without the need to adjust existing formulations.
Brasco's business research director to renewable energy and biochemicals, Sililo Vieira, said the partnership is an crucial measure towards a sustainable future to the petrochemical sector. Bio-acetone is expected to be available on an manufacturing scale by 2028. At present, Brasco is continuing to consolidate its leading position in the field of renewable chemicals through the layout of bio-based polyethylene, electronic naphtha coupling and bio-acetone, and 49% of its research and research resources have been invested in sustainable research projects in 2025.
