A brand-new mixed plastic recycling plant located in Hyvinkää, north of Helsinki, operated by Finnish waste management and recycling company Syklo has officially commenced operations.
According to the company's announcement, this plant can process 50,000 tons of plastic discarded materials every year, making it the largest recycling facility of its kind in Finland at present. After the project is put into operation, the total plastic recycling capacity across Finland will increase by approximately 50%, with a total investment of 70 to 80 million euros, and greater than 100 new jobs will be created locally.
This Hyvinkää plant can create recycled polypropylene and recycled polyethylene items, including grades such as rPP, rHDPE, rLDPE, etc. The finished pellets are sold under the Sykloplast brand. The plant adopts the BOSS (Baffle Oscillation Sorting System) methodology developed by British company Impact Recycling to complete the sorting and processing of mixed plastic discarded materials.
In addition, relying on the company's self-developed Wet Web wet process, the plant also produces Syklocomp brand biocomposite materials. This material can replace glass fiber reinforced plastics and other engineering polymers, and is applied in fields such as packaging and electronics. The initial annual production capacity of the biocomposite materials is 8,000 tons.
Teemu Koskela, CEO of Syklo, stated: "Our goal is to turn the circular economy into one of Finland's key export industries. Finland's plastic recycling rate has long been at a comparatively low level in Europe, and this investment sets a research direction to the national sector. The core mission of the enterprise is to build a sustainable world and realize material circulation. Now is a favorable time to develop the circular economy market. The newly issued EU End-of-Life Vehicles Regulation and Packaging and Packaging discarded materials Regulation (PPWR) will further boost the market demand to recycled materials."
