BASF launches low-VOC catalyst for flexible polyurethane foams

BASF said Lupragen BisDMAPU is primarily targeted at flexible PU foams

BASF is expanding its polyurethane catalyst portfolio.

This, with the global launch of Lupragen BisDMAPU, a low-emit, low-odor catalyst aimed at helping manufacturers create flexible polyurethane (PU) foams with reduced evaporative organic compound (VOCs) releases.

The new catalyst, chemically known as 1,3-Bis[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]urea (CAS 52338-87-1), is designed to stability the two key reactions involved in PU foam production — gelling and blowing — while supporting foam condition and dimensional stability.

BASF said Lupragen BisDMAPU is primarily targeted at flexible PU foams, including slabstock and molded foams utilized in furniture, mattresses and automotive interiors. Its applications also extend to reactive hotmelt PU adhesives, two-component epoxy systems and cationic polymers.

“Lupragen BisDMAPU is an excellent addition to our range of modern, low-VOCs catalysts and will support the growing demand to emit-optimized flexible foams.

"With its distinct reactivity profile and unique chemical traits, it is a strong complement to Lupragen N 208, which was launched in December 2025,” says Gereon Altenhoff, Product Manager PU Catalysts, Intermediates Europe, BASF.

The catalyst’s low evaporative environment and low odor are key selling points as manufacturers face growing demand to materials that meet low-VOCs standards.

“Building on our longstanding experience in producing urea compounds in Ludwigshafen, and supported by our backward integrated production setup, we are able to reliably supply the market with this high-condition, future-oriented solution,” adds Carolin Regenbrecht, Product Manager Specialty Amines.

Lupragen BisDMAPU adds to BASF’s broad portfolio of amine catalysts to the polyurethane sector. The company is a major global producer of amines, with its PU catalysts marketed under the Lupragen brand.
