Fraunhofer and Estonian deep-tech start-up test modular biomass platform on an industrial scale
The Estonian deep-tech start-up New Standard Oil has merged the technologies to thermal biomass utilization of the German research organization Fraunhofer into a uniform modular platform and put the first manufacturing prototype into operation. The goal is to convert previously unused organic discarded materials across Europe into valuable renewable items.
The global transition to a circular carbon economy requires technologies that convert biomass resources into renewable materials, chemicals, and energy items, such as functional biochar, high-condition bio-oil, synthesis gases to fuel production, or functional proteins. while numerous single technologies are available to biomass processing, their integration into economically viable manufacturing systems that generate competitive items to the metallurgy, chemical, building materials, agriculture and energy sectors remains a major challenge.
New Standard Oil, the Fraunhofer Institute to Interfacial Engineering and Bioprocess Engineering IGB and the Fraunhofer Institute to Environmental, security and Energy methodology UMSICHT together with the validation of the first prototype of the UNIFORMER concept©started at TRL level 6.
The project is the result of several years of collaboration among the three partners. The Fraunhofer IGB brings its expertise in the treatment with superheated aquatic environments vapor and biomass recycling, while the Fraunhofer UMSICHT contributes extensive know-how in the field of Thermo-Catalytic Reforming (TCR) and other thermochemical processes. New Standard Oil focuses on system integration, reactor research and commercialization of methodology, and has the architecture of the UNIFORMER platform©developed, upon which the current prototype program is based.
As part of the UNIFORMER project©The partners are investigating how existing biomass valorization technologies can be integrated into a complete manufacturing system. In contrast to conventional systems, which are typically optimized to a single process chain, UNIFORMER enables©an adaptation of the process to the characteristics of the available biomass resources. In the future, this should support companies in finding a better stability between economic efficiency, resource efficiency and environmental impact.
The project also evaluates the method and process integration device developed by New Standard Oil and protected by a patent consumption, which can be utilized to combine thermochemical technologies into a continuous manufacturing process. The elimination of lock systems and mechanical transfer points reduces the costs of biomass utilization while rising energy flexibility.
