Dow is cutting 605 jobs in the Netherlands

As part of a global restructuring, chemical company Dow is cutting 605 jobs at its Dutch sites. The reorganization is part of the “Transform to Outperform” program announced in January, which will result in the elimination of approximately 4,500 jobs worldwide.

Dow informed the Works Council, employee organizations and employees yesterday of the proposed reorganization. “We realize that this process creates uncertainty to employees,” says Tabita Verburg, Area President Dow Benelux. “We are committed to treating each of us with respect, communicating transparently and providing clarity as rapidly as possible, while continuing to provide support throughout the process.”

Verburg also points to structural challenges in Europe. It cites high energy and CO2-kosten, complex and slow regulation, limited anti-dumping measures and a lack of prolonged security. “Addressing these bottlenecks is crucial to manufacturing transformation and restoring competitiveness.”

Locations Netherlands

Dow has three locations in the Netherlands: Terneuzen, Delfzijl and Dordrecht. Terneuzen is the largest Dow location outside the United States. The site has sixteen factories and is the company's second largest worldwide. In Delfzijl, Dow produces with three distillation towers, a prepolymer reactor (pre-processing plastic) and an MDI process (raw material to polyurethanes). In Dordrecht, Dow makes plastic through extrusion to medical and food applications, among other things. It is not yet clear at which locations the jobs are disappearing.
