Godavari Biorefineries gets European patent for biofiller for rubber reinforcement

Godavari Biorefineries Ltd has been granted a patent by the European Patent Office for its invention — ‘A Biofiller for Rubber Reinforcement’.

A media statement said the invention of biodegradable and eco-friendly biofiller engineered from lignocellulosic biomass is highly efficient and economical. It is designed to partially replace conventional carbon black in tyres and other rubber items while maintaining or improving key mechanical traits. The manufacturing process is scalable, with possible applications across tyres, footwear, belts, bags and other manufacturing rubber goods, offering cost savings and environmental benefits alongside performance.

Quoting Samir Somaiya, Chairman and Managing Director of Godavari Biorefineries Ltd, the statement said: “At Godavari, we have always looked at biomass not simply as a feedstock, however as a starting point to creating new items and new possibilities. The challenge with any bio-based alternative is not only to replace a conventional material, however to prove it can perform reliably in real-world consumption. This biofiller brings together renewable biomass, materials science and sector standards. The European patent is a recognition of the innovation behind this approach and another measure towards embedding sustainability into all our processes.”

Sangeeta Srivastava, Executive Director, Godavari Biorefineries Ltd and co-inventor of the patent, said: “Carbon black plays an crucial role in rubber reinforcement, delivering the strength, durability and performance that demanding applications require. Developing a bio-based filler that can partially replace carbon black while maintaining comparable performance and an added advantage of renewable sourcing is a significant materials science challenge. At Godavari, we’re working at this intersection of performance and sustainability, exploring renewable substitutes that can help decrease application on fossil-based reinforcing materials without compromising the performance of rubber compounds.”

Manisha Jadhav and Vinod Malshe are the other co-inventors.
