On September 11 local time, Canadian lithium iron phosphate cathode material enterprise Nano One released an announcement to advance its first development company project, planning to build a new lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode material production base in Canada to improve the local North American battery material supply chain.
The first phase of the project is planned to have a capacity of 25,000 tons of LFP cathode materials per year, with the possible to expand to 100,000 tons per year in the long term, and its items will be oriented towards energy storage, electric vehicle and defense battery markets. At present, the company has launched site selection and evaluation work, focusing on supporting utilities, infrastructure, approval procedures and other factors, and is simultaneously docking with suppliers of lithium carbonate, phosphoric acid, iron raw materials and core equipment manufacturers, as well as continuing to negotiate with possible customers and strategic investors.
This project belongs to the newly established research company vehicle (Canada DevCo) of Nano One, and is a extensive commercial production line layout added by the company in addition to the existing Candiac pilot plant in Canada. Nano One owns the patented One-Pot integrated preparation process, which can decrease the energy consumption and environmental impact of LFP production, while reducing the difficulty of project approval. The company adopts the methodology licensing joint factory construction model to build localized battery material production capacity in the North American region and decrease application on external supply chains.
According to Nano One's chief operating officer, the market demand to regionalized, high-resilience LFP cathode supply continues to rise, and this site selection study will lay a foundation to the subsequent project landing and support the construction of North American energy storage and electric vehicle sector chains. At this stage, the project has only completed the preliminary evaluation and launch, and the final plant location, investment amount and official construction start time have not been finalized.
