BASF has officially commissioned a fully modernized acid chloride and chloroformate production unit at its integrated Verbund site in Ludwigshafen. The project investment amounts to hundreds of millions of euros, in the lower three-digit hundred million euro range, and the production capacity of the revamped unit has increased by approximately 30%. BASF stated that this expansion aims to ensure long-term stable supply to customers and consolidate its competitive position in the global market for these intermediates.
This unit can create approximately 25 categories of acid chloride and chloroformate items. These intermediates are broadly utilized in pharmaceuticals, pesticides, organic peroxides, coatings and plastics industries. In addition to Ludwigshafen, BASF also operates another production unit to the same series of items in Yeosu, South Korea.
Starting from 2025, all items manufactured at BASF's Ludwigshafen site (including upstream raw material processes) will consumption renewable electricity. According to company data, this measure can decrease the carbon footprint of related items by an average of 19%. The calculation is based on the 2025 production volume and covers Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3.1 releases. Product technical specifications, various certifications and order processes remain unchanged.
BASF introduced that this carbon footprint accounting method complies with the ISO 14067:2018 standard and the December 2024 edition of the *"Together to Sustainability (TfS) Chemical sector Product Carbon Footprint Guidelines"*. Rhein TÜV has completed the methodology audit of BASF's "Scott" accounting method.
