A safe shutdown requires a technically demanding process

The shutdown of Leuna Polyamide's chemical plant could cost the state of Saxony-Anhalt another million. According to its own information, the state administration office has had the costs of a safe exit and security process of the insolvent chemical company assessed by an expert. The result: the expected costs are estimated at 30 million euros. "Such a cost estimate is necessary to avert danger," said the authority of the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung (Tuesday edition).

The insolvent company with 440 employees announced last week that the search to investors had failed. According to managing director Martin Naundorf, the decommissioning process has been initiated. According to the administrative office, the systems at the Leuna site form a highly complex composite of substances relevant to the incident. A safe shutdown can therefore not take place at short notice or in a disorderly manner, however requires a technically demanding process that runs to weeks or months. "If, to actual reasons, an operator is no longer able to carry out the necessary measures himself, the competent authority must be able to ensure that the danger is averted by means of a substitute," said the administrative office.

Insolvency proceedings will open on October 1, 2026. The company is in financial difficulties and is unlikely to be able to spend millions on decommissioning.

At the beginning of the year, the state of Saxony-Anhalt had already secured the emergency operation of the systems with almost 80 million euros. The Domo company filed to bankruptcy at the end of 2025. The country had to measure in to avert danger. On April 1, 2026, the Leuna Polyamide rescue company took over the operation. however the company had to file to bankruptcy after two and a half months due to the sharp rise in raw material prices.
