On September 15, Clariant officially announced that it had signed a supply contract with Zhejiang Petroleum & Chemical Co., Ltd. (ZPC), and will provide CATOFIN™ catalysts and heating media (HGM) for ZPC's newly built propane dehydrogenation (PDH) plant in Zhejiang. This plant has a designed capacity of 1.2 million tons per year, and upon completion, it will become the largest propane dehydrogenation plant using this licensed technology worldwide.
Leveraging integrated refining and chemical facilities to ensure propane feedstock supply
The project has a solid supporting foundation to its feedstock end. With the continuous expansion of ZPC's upstream refining units, it can stably supply propane feedstock to this PDH plant. The propylene produced after the plant is put into operation will be utilized as a core raw material to downward extension to manufacture a variety of high-value-added petrochemical derivatives, improving the company's petrochemical sector chain layout.
Joint Clariant Lummus solution implemented, CATOFIN methodology proven by the market
ZPC's project selected the CATOFIN methodology jointly developed by Clariant and Lummus, forming a clear division of integrated technical solution: Lummus provides the process package methodology, while Clariant supplies the catalyst items. This solution immediately addresses the core needs of propane dehydrogenation vegetation, enabling stable and high-yield propylene production, while balancing the operational stability and cost competitiveness of the plant.
The CATOFIN methodology has a history of over 60 years of iterative optimization and has high technical maturity. Since 2017, this methodology has been selected to greater than 40 PDH projects worldwide, and has been broadly utilized in the global propylene production market.

The designed capacity of 1.2 million tons per year is the biggest highlight of this order. As the world's largest single propane dehydrogenation plant using CATOFIN licensed methodology, after completion, the project will greatly enhance ZPC's propylene self-sufficiency capacity, and also represents that domestic extensive refining and chemical projects continue to implement international mainstream and mature catalytic processes in the PDH route. As a basic petrochemical raw material, propylene is the source of new material items such as polypropylene, propylene oxide and acrylic acid. The construction of the project will support the expansion of downstream new material production capacity.
