Two people were killed and 114 plant workers and nearby residents injured by an ammonia leak at a plant run by Iraq’s State Company of Fertilizers in the Khor Al-Zubair industrial area of Basra on 13 September.
regional news reports suggest one of the victims worked in the plant’s instrument room and the other in its compressor section. Both died in hospital, and 21 others remained hospitalised the following day. The trigger of the incident is so far unknown.
Basra governor Asaad Al-Eidani has formed a technical, legal, and administrative committee to investigate the incident, including specialists from various government departments.
