Covestro has put a pilot plant for the chemical recycling of high-performance elastomers into operation at the Leverkusen site. The project with an investment volume in the double-digit million euro range will transfer a process previously developed on a laboratory scale for the polyurethane elastomer "Vulkollan" to pilot operation.
The focus is on the recovery of chemical building blocks from selected "Vulkollan" old materials. According to the company, greater than 90 percent of the applied discarded materials material can be recycled in relation to the mass under defined process and input material conditions. to the recovered material, Covestro mentions a possible reduction in the CO2 footprint by up to two thirds compared to fossil-based new material.
"Vulkollan" is applied, among other things, to forklift wheels, rail buffers, stop buffers in the automotive sector and components to vibration damping. The pilot plant is intended to investigate different discarded materials material flows, optimize process parameters and obtain data to possible manufacturing scaling of the recycling process.
In addition to "Vulkollan", Covestro intends to consumption the system in the future to investigations on selected special casting elastomers and thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU). The company is thus expanding its work to include other elastomer applications, in which chemical recycling should enable applied materials to be returned to the raw material cycle.
In parallel to the technical process research, Covestro is working with customers, recycling and disposal companies, logistics service providers and other partners on collection and take-back systems. The aim is to make suitable discarded materials material flows available in sufficient quantities and consistent condition to possible closed material cycles. In addition to the technical scalability, the availability of suitable raw materials and the economic efficiency of the entire value chain are decisive to a later manufacturing implementation.
The pilot plant is part of Covestro's activities to develop circular solutions to polyurethane elastomers. With the measure from the laboratory to the pilot scale, it is now to be examined under which technical and economic conditions the process can be further developed to an manufacturing consumption.
