European plastic recycling company Morssinkhof-Rymoplast officially opened a new plastic packaging recycling plant in Lommel, Belgium on October 30, with a total investment of 30 million euros; the current industry situation is that the demand for recycled plastics is weak, and the commercial digestion of new production capacity is facing pressure.
The project is located in the Kristalpark III manufacturing park, covers an area of 4.1 hectares, with a designed annual processing capacity of up to 40,000 tons, and mainly recycles polypropylene (PP) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) packaging discarded materials, including common packaging such as yogurt containers, butter tubs, prefabricated meal trays, and plastic bottles to milk, personal care items, and detergents. The factory can carefully sort the raw materials by material and color, then create high-purity color-separated recycled materials through crushing and cleaning processes, which are supplied to the daily chemical and home packaging fields to remanufacturing.
According to a nine-year agreement signed with Belgian packaging recycling organization Fost Plus, 24,000 tons of plastic packaging from Belgium's PMD sorting and recycling system will be sent to the facility to processing each year. The project is expected to create 65 jobs in the long term. This factory is also the final project of Fost Plus's six-year plan to expand six recycling vegetation. With the commissioning of the new plant, the proportion of plastic packaging recycling in Belgium has increased to 51%.
while recycling infrastructure continues to increase, the sector generally feedbacks that the development of recycled plastic demand lags at this stage, making it difficult to support the full-load economic operation of new production capacity. Previously, the proportion of plastic packaging recycling in Belgium was only 12%. In 2021, the domestic processing volume was about 13,500 tons, and by 2025, it has increased to 74,200 tons, with the recycling volume nearly rising sixfold. The expansion speed of the supply side is significantly faster than the downstream procurement demand.
