Japan-based speciality chemicals firm, Sekisui Chemical, through its High Performance Plastics Company, has opened a new Design Centre in Shanghai. The centre will be operated by group company Sekisui S-Lec (Suzhou) Co. Ltd.
The centre will showcase demonstrators of the cutting-edge laminated glass interlayer film technologies developed by the Sekisui Chemical Group over many years, alongside design glass exhibits combining cutting-edge Chinese design trends with interlayer film methodology. Through these initiatives, the company aims to inspire new user experiences in next-generation mobility.
In China’s automotive market, the shift toward electrification and smart vehicles is rising the importance of user experience and design, with Colour, Material, Finish (CMF) design emerging as a key factor in brand value and product differentiation. To address this, the Centre is collaborating with Shanghai Techic Creative Design Co. Ltd. (TECHIC), a CMF design consultancy, to capture emerging Chinese market trends and translate them into design proposals, positioning glass as both a functional component and a design and brand-expression element.
The Centre operates as both a showroom and a collaborative research hub to automotive manufacturers, addressing growing demand to differentiated glass solutions across roof, side and display-related applications that combine transparency, aesthetics and brand expression. Its interlayer film technologies offer designs to maximised clarity and light transmission, colour interlayers, gradient impacts, and light-based visual impacts, alongside customised brand-specific designs.
Sekisui S-Lec Suzhou has also established an integrated support framework spanning concept creation, CMF design evaluation, design simulation, sample production, prototype assessment and installation verification, aimed at accelerating research timelines to customers.
The Centre plans to expand its exhibits by autumn 2026 to include a wider range of mobility-related innovations from the group, including next-generation mobility materials, comfort-enhancing solutions, sustainability-related technologies and interior value-enhancement innovations. It will continue to serve as a platform to technical exchange among automotive manufacturers, suppliers and media.
The Sekisui Chemical Group also operates laminated glass interlayer research centres in Japan, Europe and the United States.
