A consortium of Indian fertiliser companies, led by Indian Potash Limited, has launched one of the largest coordinated raw material procurement schemes in the industry.

The Indian Fertilizer Consortium, led by Indian Potash Limited, has launched one of the largest coordinated raw material procurement plans in the industry. It plans to purchase a total of 536000 tons of bulk anhydrous ammonia from key ports on the east and west coasts of India between June and August 2026 to reserve raw materials for fertilizer production before the key agricultural cycle.

Procurement Background and Participants

The procurement was coordinated by the Indian Potash Limited and executed on behalf of a consortium of major Indian fertilizer companies, including Indian Farmers Fertilizer Co-operation Ltd., Paradip Phosphates Ltd., Coromandel International Ltd., Gujarat Fertilizer and Chemicals Ltd., Indrama India Pte Ltd., Travankol Fertilizer and Chemicals Ltd. and Osteval Group, covering the core of India's fertilizer manufacturing and distribution ecology, highlight the strategic priority of ensuring a stable supply of ammonia for domestic production.

Procurement Scale and Port Allocation

  • Total amount and rhythm as of June 2026, it is planned to import 173000 tons, increasing to 178000 tons in July and 185000 tons in August, with a total purchase target of 536000 tons per month.
  • Port Allocation: 370000 tons allocated at East Coast ports and 166000 tons at West Coast facilities. Among them, Paradep on the east coast has become the largest single receiving hub, with plans to handle nearly 190000 tons. The second is Kakinada (90000 tons) and Kandela (84000 tons). The goods will enter the country through several ports such as Sika, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Cochin, Visakaka and Haldia.

Strategic Significance and Industry Impact

  1. supply chain security: The large-scale import plan reflects the expected increase in agricultural demand in India. Against the background of global raw material market fluctuations, manufacturers are stocking up for fertilizer production cycles in advance to ease supply uncertainty caused by geopolitics, energy price fluctuations and changes in trade patterns.
  2. Bargaining power enhancement: The alliance-based joint procurement structure will enhance the bargaining power of Indian companies and international suppliers, improve freight economics, and reduce the procurement and logistics costs of a single company.
  3. Tender Arrangements: Suppliers are required to submit quotations according to CFR/CIF standards, which can be quoted separately for each port and coastal area. The bidding process is scheduled to end in mid-May, and the cargo distribution and delivery schedule will be finalized later.
Although India is seeking to expand its domestic anhydrous ammonia production capacity, this large-scale purchase still highlights the country's continued dependence on imported ammonia and fertilizer intermediates, and alliance procurement has become a key measure to balance supply security and cost efficiency.
