Syensqo ends fluorosurfactants production in Italy

Belgian chemical firm, Syensqo, has announced the end of production of C6O4, the last fluorosurfactant used to make certain fluoropolymers at its Spinetta Marengo site in Italy. The move delivers on the commitment the company announced in 2022 to phase out fluorosurfactants by 2026, while it continues to produce high-performance fluoropolymers for semiconductors, batteries, hydrogen and other specialised industrial applications.

Fluorosurfactants are manufacturing aids utilized in producing certain fluoropolymers. They have been a particular focus of regulatory and general attention within the broader PFAS discussion. Syensqo said its research and innovation investment since 2019 has produced a new polymerisation process that does not need fluorosurfactants, while maintaining the performance and reliability customers expect from fluoropolymers. The technologies have since been rolled out across product lines, allowing the company to cease C6O4 production in Italy.

Mr. Mike Radossich, CEO of Syensqo, said the milestone “reflects years of investment in innovation”. The company has developed manufacturing technologies that remove the need to fluorosurfactants while continuing to supply fluoropolymers to critical applications, including semiconductors, clean energy and healthcare, he said. Fluoropolymers remain essential to technologies supporting the energy transition, medical innovation, clean aquatic environments and digital infrastructure, he added.

Syensqo said the production stop reflects its strategy of reducing releases from manufacturing processes while continuing to innovate in high-performance polymers, and of supporting evolving regulatory expectations through science-based solutions.

Nearly 100% of the company’s fluoropolymers are now made without these PFAS processing aids. About 1% of the sites’ production volume, comprising highly specialised fluoropolymers primarily to hydrogen and semiconductor applications, still needs additional research and qualification before moving to the new manufacturing methodology. Existing C6O4 inventories will be utilized to make these fluoropolymers, using the best available methodology to releases reduction.
