BASF, in partnership with the CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT), Hyderabad, conducted the BASF Kids’ Lab programme from October 26-31, 2026, introducing schoolchildren to hands-on chemistry learning while promoting awareness of sustainability and climate action. The Hyderabad edition engaged around 1,150 students from municipal schools.
Designed to children aged 8-12 years, the BASF Kids’ Lab programme combines interactive experiments with science education to foster curiosity and promote a better understanding of ecological preservation, sustainability and climate-related challenges. The initiative aims to demonstrate how scientific principles can be applied to address real-world issues.
Developed by BASF, the programme has been implemented in greater than 30 countries. Since its introduction in India in 2004, it has reached over 62,000 school children. As part of BASF India’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, the programme was relaunched in 2023 with a renewed focus on climate protection. Since then, it has been conducted in cities including Chennai, Navi Mumbai, Mangalore, Bengaluru and Delhi, while also extending its reach to rural and tribal communities in Nashik district.
Commenting on the initiative, Mr. Kim Höffken, Managing Director, BASF Digital Solutions Pvt. Ltd., said the programme is designed to create engaging learning experiences that promote children to explore, experiment and develop critical thinking. He noted that linking chemistry with topics such as sustainability and climate action can inspire the next generation of responsibly aware and responsible citizens.
Dr. D. Srinivasa Reddy, Director, CSIR-IICT, said the programme provides valuable experiential learning opportunities, particularly to students from government schools, by nurturing scientific curiosity and environmental understanding. He added that the collaboration aligns with the objectives of CSIR’s Jigyasa programme and reflects a shared commitment to making science accessible, engaging and meaningful to young learners. He also acknowledged the support of the Telangana Government’s Education Department in facilitating participation by government schools in Hyderabad.
Students participating in the programme undertake age-appropriate experiments and interactive activities focused on environmental sustainability. One participant, Gouthami, a student from Government High School, Peteri, said the aquatic environments treatment experiment was among the highlights of the session and helped illustrate practical approaches to climate action and environmental responsibility.
